Red Carpet Rundown Special Edition: Getting Your Geek On

0

…and a website that will ruin you.

It is upon us…the Mother of all Cons: San Diego Comic Con! From July 18-21 geeks from all over the world descend on San Diego, taking the city by storm and reveling in all things nerdy. So, being a proud geek myself, I wanted to share some fashion tips that i’ve gleaned from my many years at SDCC.

What does a comic covention have to do with fashion and red carpets you may ask? Well, as geekdom has mainstreamed, the photo ops, and paparazzi have multiplied and are there to document it all. So what to wear? The most important thing is to dress appropriately for the occasion. This is not a formal event but you still want to have fun & look cool on the con carpet. And for me this means GEEKY TEES!!!!!

Comfortable and versatile, you can pair them with just about anything to dress them up or down. They can be great conversation starters too–so my only “rule” is KNOW what you are wearing and wear what you LIKE.  Geeks smell posers & nothing is more disappointing than talking to someone in a Star Trek tee who doesn’t know what a tribble is. So happily geeky tees have become my Con uniform–but mainly because I delight in wearing them.

For those of you that know me, you know that i’m slightly addicted to them. Honestly, I should start a geeky tee anon support group (GTA) my drawers are full of them (don’t believe me? Check out www.thestephaniethorpe.com for my geeky tee pic of the week).

Yet, I refuse to take responsibilty for my compulsion—nothing gives me quite a thrill like a perfect mashup of star wars & hello kitty or a beloved X-men character re-envisioned in an art nouveau style. Instead I place the blame squarely on the shoulders of all the fabulous tee shirt companies that have popped up, along with their apps so you can buy them ON YOUR PHONE! Seriously, where were you guys when i was a kid? And recognizing the growing geek female demographic, they offer women’s sizes and styles. Some companies, like teefury.com and shirtaday.com, offer the tees for a limited time of only 24hrs, while others like threadless.com and welovefinetees.com (who have a fabulous ElfQuest line I’m involved in) keep their designs around a bit longer.

RCR TIP: And this is where I pass my addiction on to you: www.dayoftheshirt.com –a website that aggregates MANY of the daily tee sites. So you can see them all at one click. Very dangerous stuff here. Proceed with caution. You were warned.

As for Comic Con: just keep wearing that geeky tee for the nightime soirees. Or switch to a tank (and jacket–it does get cold at night) and don some geeky bling for flair!
