Get Up Off That Ass! 5 Ways to Dump Your Artistic Slump

Kosha PatelI don’t know how it is in other parts of the world, but here in Los Angeles, we go through slumps.  I’m in one right now and it sucks.  A slump can be any kind of slump.  It can be the kind where you just got dumped by your boyfriend and you haven’t had an agent in years so paid gigs are as realistic as flying unicorns who sing in Spanish.  Or it can be the kind of slump where you just finished the best job of your life and you’re terrified because it’s over and you may never work again.  Whatever kind of slump you’re in, there are a few tiny steps you can take to kick that butt back in motion.  (Because let’s be honest, you have a very nice butt.)

1.  Chug two large glasses of water.

You think I’m kidding, but I’m not.  Odds are you’re probably dehydrated, which only fuels depression and lethargy.  So get up and go chug two glasses of water immediately.  If nothing else, at least your skin will look nicer.

2.  Hit the Gym!

I know, I know, I hate the gym too.  It sucks.  But just go.  Even if you don’t want to challenge yourself, walk on the treadmill.  Or if you prefer doing something outdoors, go on a hike, or maybe for a swim.  Keeping your body active will give you more mental clarity as opposed to feeling stuck in your slump.

3.  Write in your journal.

Yes, boys, I’m talking to you too.  Keeping a journal allows you to tap into your subconscious and that’s where brilliant ideas come from!  If you need a little guidance, I would start by picking up The Artist’s Way. It’s kind of like Journaling for Dummies, except ten times more profound.

4. Unplug.

This one is hard to do.  But sometimes logging off Facebook, laying low on Twitter, and ignoring phone calls and emails can be liberating.  When you’re electronically disconnected, you have no choice but to depend on your creative spirit.

5. Hit up a rock show, go to the movies, or visit your local art gallery!

Find a way to get out and see some art.  Soaking up someone else’s creativity will inspire you to find your own again.
