Ms. In The Biz Founder Favorites! – January 2016

0

Last year I shared a number of my current favorites for entrepreneurs in the entertainment business and other creatives, and I thought I’d start the year off by sharing some more! These things are all vastly different, but help me out in a variety of ways. Hope you find them handy too!

Favorite book on my shelf: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING.  I re-read it on my road trip to New Orleans this winter and it has helped me so much in really simplifying what it is that I want to achieve in my career and my life and getting rid of anything that is distracing me from those “essential intents”.  This is the perfect book for anyone who finds themselves “busy” but not knowing what they heck they are really busy with, or the person who says “yes” to everything without really thinking about if they actually WANT to do it or SHOULD do it. This book is GOLDEN.

Favorite Photographer to shoot with: Cathy Baron Photography

I recently did a shoot with Cathy Baron and it was SO MUCH fun.  She has an incredible eye and her photos are amazing. If you are looking for promotional shots to add to your portfolio, she is definitely someone to hire!

Favorite App: Headspace

I’ve had a rather lackluster meditation practice for the last decade or so, and the Headspace app has made things MUCH easier for me. For those people new to meditation, this is a great way to ease yourself in 😉

Favorite Entrepreneurial Course: StartUp Camp

I mentioned this in my last “favorites” article, but I’ve just got to mention it again. I’m a BIG BIG BIG fan of Dale Partridge’s StartUp Camp. I have learned so much that can be applied to so many different areas of business and entrepreneurship. It’s a 12 month course only $99/month (less if you buy the 12 month course up front), and there is so much incredible information, but none of it is overwhelming. He’s kind of a master at giving you everything in the best bite sized pieces so that you are able to fully execute each month’s tasks. It’s a STELLAR COURSE and has me rethinking a lot about not only my career, but my life as a whole.

Favorite Workbook:  Crashbooks

My buddy Ben Mathes is a freaking genius. This is like a very straight forward and to-the-point “Artist’s Way”-eque type book.  I’ve been using it as a daily journal/workbook, and answering a question per page every morning while I drink my Rooibos tea. It has added A LOT of joy, introspection, and value into my days 😉 THANK YOU BEN!

Shhhhh….. My Favorite Beauty Secret: Eyelash Extensions from Emlash Studio

Now, this is totally not related to entrepreneurship (aside from the fact that it’s nice to look and feel like a million bucks when putting ourselves out there in the world professionally) but ladies, you’ll feel me on this one…

I’d heard about eyelash extensions for a long time, and have had a number of friends who swear by them.  I’m gearing up to shoot a feature film at the end of March on location in New Mexico, so I decided to give them a try to see if it’s something that I’d like to have during the shoot and heck, perhaps for life in general…

I went to Akiko who works with Jeannie at Emlash Studio after having been referred by 2 different people independently of one another and the experience was AWESOME.  I decided to just get a half “classic” look (which is totally subtle and natural) before diving into more of a “volume look” that I think I’ll be wearing for the shoot.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is the subtle look that I got in order to ease into it….

Truth is, I LOVE it.  It’s a bit pricey and to keep the look up, you have to get new fills done every 3-4 weeks or so depending on your lash cycle, but it’s totally worth it to not have to layer on the mascara and eye makeup!  I’ve heard that some people can have an allergic reaction to the glue, but I had no irritation at all and it feels like there is nothing on my lashes. It’s freaking rad.

See you next month for more Founder Favorites!
