4 Mistakes Film People Make

0

We all make mistakes, it’s a fact of life. But try to skip these common flubs so you can hurry up and take over Hollywood.

  1. Not signing a crew memo deal, agreement, and/or a contract. Read what you sign. Make sure everything you negotiated or discussed with Producers is written. Get a copy of it. And yes, sometimes payroll can get confusing for production. If that occurs, or god forbid someone refuses to pay you what you’re owed, well you have a lovely paper trail. This also benefits and protects the production side of things as well.
  2. Not backing everything up. Technology fails. Computers crash. Spending $120 on an external hard-drive is well worth the piece of mind it provides. And it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than spending an arm and a leg to recover lost or damaged files.
  3. Lying about your skills. We’ve all fibbed about the things we can do. A white lie here or there to bulk up your resume when you’re starting out is usually harmless. However, NEVER claim you know an acquired skill, one that takes time to learn, when you don’t. Not only does it hold up production because you don’t know what the hell you’re doing, it can affect future work. Everyone knows everyone and people in this town talk. Make sure they say good things about you.
  4. Compromising your safety. No job, from a big budget blockbuster to an indie film by your favorite director, is worth your safety. People that are willing to jeopardize the lives of their cast or crew don’t deserve respect or accolades. There is nothing wrong with politely declining a job or errand when you feel unsafe.
