The podcast world is new for me. I had never had an opportunity to explore podcasts, until a few months ago. I had the incredible pleasure of being on the talented L. Ariel’s podcast “Hey, How Did You Get That Music Job?

L. Ariel’s podcast gives listeners a good insight into various jobs in the music industry. It’s also been rated one of the top industry podcasts two years in a row. Past guests have included music business coach and consultant Suzanne Paulinski, video game composer Cris Velasco (Fortnite, Assassins, and Resident Evil), and film and TV composer Jared Forman (for hit TV series such as Jane the Virgin and Making A Murderer).

Music Jobs Podcasts left me curious to see what other awesome podcasts are out there that are run by more boss ladies. What I discovered was a diverse and bright group of women producing entertaining and enlightening content. Here are a few of my favorites:

Angry Grrl Music of the Indie Rock Persuasion

A podcast highlighting women, LGBTQ+, and minority movements in the punk rock and indie rock scenes. Produced by Amanda Starling, she gives females in the arts community a safe and encompassing platform for women, LGBTQ+, and minorities to share their stories and opinions. My favorite episode stars the one and only, Ellen and the Degenerates. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the band comprises five members: Elena, Greg, Josh, Louis, and Johnny. Elena and Greg chat with Amanda about writing and playing music, as well as being influencers in the New York punk scene.

Stuff Mom Never Told You

Hosted by Anney Reese and Samantha McVey, the podcast hosts brilliant discussions and shared ideas on feminism and the life of women. My favorite episode is about the forgotten black women of punk rock. That’s right, you heard correctly…Even though punk rock has had some awesome black women who were major influencers in the genre, it’s often a genre credited to white musicians.

2 Dope Queens

Hosted by the hilarious queens, Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, 2 Dope Queens is a pensive podcast covering topics from issues of gender and race to black women hair, fashion, and culture. In my favorite episode, Phoebe and Jessica connect with the former First Lady, Michelle Obama. The eloquent queen herself talks about her experience as a black women in the public eye and educational organizations she contributes to.

The Business

One of the guilty pleasures I picked up when I moved to Los Angeles was KCRW and their legendary programming. So many greats have graced the airways from within the walls of KCRW headquarters, and one of them happens to be an award-winning journalist. The astonishing Kate Masters of the Hollywood Reporter produces the weekly podcast The Business, talking about entertainment industry news and conducting interviews with the movers and shakers in the industry An unforgettable episode was when she interviewed award-winning filmmaker and writer, Dream Hampton. Their discussion covers her experience as executive producer on the docuseries, Surviving R. Kelly.

It’s exciting to see so many women creating platforms for other women to share their ideas, educate each other, and to share their stories. What’s great about the above mentioned podcasts is that there is something for everyone, no matter what your interests are. They are not just limited to music and film. Art is about life, emotions, and the journey. I hope you find something that inspires you.
