The holiday season is a tricky time for everyone. What do you give to your family, friends, and Secret Santa at work? How are you going to thank your representation for their support and reach out in a special way to that casting director you have been building a relationship with? It is very easy to get caught up in giving that will have some reciprocal benefit to us. But what if we gave our gifts, time, and energy to someone or something, and didn’t expect anything in return? Anything tangible, that is. In the season of giving and receiving, I challenge you to give to the great big wonderful community of strangers that we are surrounded with.
Bringing this back to “the biz,” may I remind you that most organizations are involved in community outreach and charity work throughout the year. It helps promote unity within the company, pride in their own work, and a general boost of morale. The secret that these organizations grasp is that their employees are generally happier people when they are giving back.
Your business, your sole proprietor business selling you, is no different. Although the focus should be on what you can do for people, organizations, and causes in need, you will be amazed at the connections, stories, and experiences you will take away. Intimidated to go at it alone, call a friend and bond over giving back. They don’t call it community service for nothing!
To give you a head start I have compiled a list of organizations around LA that need help all year round, but especially during the holidays. If you live in NY, Chicago, or another market, there are definitely similar organizations in your area that need you. Just use Google or the amazing site, Great NonProfits, and be sure to share your experiences with others. You never know who might jump on the community service bandwagon with you!
