The Love of My Life

0

Lindsay Cooley

The average child is taught life’s priorities in this order; to find the love of their life, get married, have children and work in a field that interests them, which also pays them enough to provide for their family.

I was taught to find what I truly love in life and the rest will follow.

Working at a talent agency is not what I originally thought I would be doing as a career, but now that I am, I can’t imagine doing anything else. My married friends often joke that I speak about my job the way they speak about their spouses! I am absolutely in love with my job.

I went to college in New York City and majored in Advertising and Marketing Communications. I’ve always been interested in advertising and commercials and thought it would be fun working on the copywriting for commercials. Instead, I help put the actors into commercials as a representative at a talent agency. There isn’t a specific college major required to break into the business of agenting, but there are specific skills and personality traits an individual must posses in order to be successful working at an agency. Being assertive, passionate, creative, street smart, book smart and being able to multi-task are a few of the most important.

I interned at a talent agency when I was still in college and I loved it, but finding a job in fashion was what I immediately fell into after graduating. It was easier to find a job in fashion than entertainment in NY and when the opportunity arose, I took it.  I worked in fashion for a few years but never felt 100% in love with my career. I was going against what I was taught and while I felt comfortable, I wasn’t satisfied.

A couple of years later I moved from NYC to LA and soon got the entertainment industry bug!  I made a decision that I needed to immediately change career paths from fashion to entertainment. I decided my first step would be to contact a few people I already knew in the industry. The day after I reached out I was extremely lucky to find out that the agency I had initially interned at while in college was looking to fill a temp spot for a few months. The timing of my decision couldn’t have been better and it was a perfect opportunity for me to step in and figure out whether or not working at an agency was what I was meant to do.  Needless to say, the temp desk turned into a full time position and I’ve been with the same company for the past two and a half years.

One of my favorite things about working in the entertainment industry is being surrounded with creative people everyday who actually enjoy their careers. Although it is one of the most stressful, time-consuming industries in America, it is also one of the most fun and rewarding. Whether in front of or behind the camera we in the industry are creating pop culture for the rest of the world- which is really cool to think about!!  If we didn’t enjoy what we do, we would be doing a job that pays our bills and allows us to clock out at 5pm every day to be with our friends and family. It is a choice for us to be in this crazy business, and when we’re working more than we’re doing anything else we might as well be in love with it. If not, what’s the point?  I’m happy to say I’ve found the love of my life and the rest will continue to follow…  🙂
