Being a busy Ms. in the Biz, I thought it was time to revamp my closet to get ready for pilot season, so I recently held my first clothing swap & it was such a success, I hope that everyone tries this at least once.
Ask all your girlfriends a few weeks in advance to raid their closets & purge all the clothes they haven’t touched in years.
Set up your swap room with signs and some full length mirrors, We used a long table labeled for tanks, tees, cardigans, and sweaters. We set up a hanging rack for dresses, skirts, jackets and blouses (luckily many of us had recently tried to switch to skinny velvet hangers so we had lots of hangers we were giving away to help hang things up). Had a small table for accessories and floor space was used for bags, purses, and shoes. I also invited people to swap recipes too by bringing a homemade dish to share.
Throughout the swap we sipped champagne punch, quiche, dips, and desserts on a Saturday afternoon sharing stories, stripping down to undies to try everything on, and making new friends. I asked everyone to choose an item or two they were taking home and did a Mini-Photoshoot with each lady.
(These are a few of my favorite pictures from the day of ladies in their new finds)
Even though a lot of items found new homes there is a second element to this event, an act of charity… As people thin out and the chaos starts to settle all the unclaimed items got boxed up for charity organizations to pick up.
I challenged myself to try to purchase less this year… I have enough clothes so I challenge you to do the same. Unless you specifically need something for a job try to Swap, upcycle, tailor, deconstruct, and reconstruct your already awesome items. Try a 30 day dress challenge or even a 7 day dress or shirt challenge where you wear one item everyday for a week or month but try to find new creative ways to style it to make it seem like a completely different outfit.
I tried a Dress Challenge with A Dress I got From The Swap!
Are you planning a clothing swap or have you done one in the past? Do you have any tips or fun things that you are planning on doing/or did in the past for the event? I’d love to hear about it! Leave me a comment below!
