Countdown to Headshots

0

Jen Levin.jpgI recently reshot my headshots in an effort to get more auditions in 2014 (my auditions have significantly slowed down recently and I figure new pictures can’t hurt). I’ve shot headshots plenty of times with several photographers and over the years I’ve learned a few things that can help you make the most of your time with your photographer.

First of all, if you’ve never shot with this particular photographer before, get to meet them. I personally shot again with Joanna DeGeneres who I love and worked with last time, but if you are working with a new photographer make sure that the first time you meet isn’t on your shoot day. Try to meet up for coffee so you and your photographer can discuss what you are trying to get out of your shoot. If they can’t meet in person, do a Skype session or at least a chat online. You want to make sure that when you arrive at your shoot, your photographer knows what you need, what you want, and what you like. You don’t want to have to waste time going over those things when you could spend that time shooting.

Also, make sure that the week leading up to your shoot that you are doing everything you can to get yourself ready. The day before the shoot is not the time to get a facial or get your eyebrows waxed. You want to do that about a week before so your skin has some time to calm down. Also, try to be careful about what you eat. You don’t want your skin freaking out on your shoot day. And make sure to get plenty of sleep! While a makeup artist can cover up under eye circles, you still will look better if you are well rested!

Speaking of makeup artists, I believe that it is a requirement, not an option, to hire a makeup artist. Unless you are a professional yourself (and by professional I mean someone who gets paid to do it), you want someone else to do your makeup. I’m not a good makeup person myself, and the first few times I did headshots I did my own makeup. My reasoning was that I didn’t want to look made up in the photos if I could not recreate that look on my own. That was a huge mistake. Good makeup artists will make you look natural and just a better version of yourself. I have never regretting using a makeup artist on the shoot.

Make sure you bring plenty of options for clothing with you. I personally have had my colors done by Jill Kirsh and use the swatch book she gave me to pick out what colors of clothing I purchase. If you haven’t done that, just make sure you bring bright colors and a variety of options. I brought several tops, tank tops, and sweaters to make some interesting combinations. Some of the combinations I would never have considered to do in life, but in photos they look amazing!

And finally, have fun! These are headshots. They aren’t too serious so make sure that you have a good time on set (even when you are taking your serious look shots). Hopefully the time will fly by and you will have an amazing gallery of pictures to chose from when you are done (below are some of my choices).
