I’ve been out of acting classes for a while. I know this isn’t a good thing, but it’s been tough for me to find another class for me that feels right.
When I was in college, I started studying with Kip King. I met him through a friend of mine who was also in improv class with me and she thought that Kip would be a great teacher for me. And she was right. Kip was like my acting teacher soulmate. I grew so much in that class and Kip really understood how to push me to make me a better actress.
Sadly, Kip passed away and his death really hit me hard. It wasn’t just a tough personal loss, but a career loss as well.
I’ve tried to get back into acting class since Kip’s death, but they never felt right.
But I’ve finally found something that has been working for me lately. I’m taking class through MasterClass. It’s an online class system taught by experts. The acting class is taught by Dustin Hoffman! The class is $90 and it gives you lifetime access to all the classes in that particular subject (this one being the acting class).
The way the class works is that there are 24 videos online that are the “classes”. There’s also a workbook with the lesson and homework for each video. You also have a script to work with for the homework.
The first video was more of an overview of what to expect. And from that video I knew that I spent my money wisely on this class. The way that Dustin Hoffman teaches is similar to how Kip taught.
The next few videos are watching Dustin Hoffman lead two actors in a lesson. The setting is more of a set than a classroom, but I think that the setting for the video doesn’t really matter.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t gotten as far as I would like for the class so far. I recently got a second day job (yay!) and that’s taking up a bit of my time. But the nice thing about this class is that I can do things at my own pace and the lessons are there for me when I’m ready. And if I want to do more than one class in a day, I can.
But from doing this online class, I’ve gotten over my issues with taking another acting class. I don’t know if I felt like I was betraying Kip’s memory by working with a new acting teacher, but now I really feel ready to work with someone new in person when I’m done with MasterClass.
Are any of you taking Dustin Hoffman’s class through MasterClass? I’d love to hear about how it’s been going for you! Let me know in the comments! And if you are taking the class and are LA based, let me know as well so we can work on the scenes/homework together.
