Relaxing the Actor’s Mind – Filling the Well

Pic 1Every once in awhile, we hit a wall and we feel like we have nothing to draw from for inspiration or creativity. The well has run dry. Feeling stuck in this position feels lousy. It can make you feel all sorts of crazy, depressed, and out and out bummed. Next time you feel tapped out, why not try one of these ideas to help fill yourself up again?

1. Get lost in a story: Pick up a book, a movie, even a magazine. Letting yourself get lost in someone else’s world will not only take your mind off of your situation, it might even spark your thoughts to a whole new horizon.

2. Go take a hike: Speaking of new horizons, check out the photo to the left. This was a panoramic shot from up high in Coyote Hills, in Fremont, CA. Taking yourself out for a long hike can let your mind unravel. Bring a friend with you, and as you’re distracted by the sights and effort to climb uphill, be ready for ideas and stories in your head to spring forth.

3. Clean: Have you ever noticed that you seem to come up with ideas when you’re in the shower, or even doing the dishes? There’s something in your brain that just clicks off and lets your mind wander as you get lost in routine. Maybe it’s time for a little spring cleaning!

4. Go people watching: We can often get lost in ourselves, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Occasionally, I have to gone a mall or an event, and I people watch to pass the time. Aren’t we fascinating? Bring a journal and jot down the ideas and observations you see. There might be a situation, or even how someone holds themselves that can spark an idea for a character or even a new story to create.

5. Meditate! This might seem to be a recurring theme, cuz it is. It is so helpful to let your brain unwind. If it feels like a challenge, just practice for 5 minutes a day.
