I wake up every morning and lay in bed for about 20 minutes before getting up to check work emails, confirm actors last minute auditions etc. so that when I get into the office, life isn’t too hectic.
I also check my texts. The first text I receive is always from my dad. He lives in Florida on East Coast time so he is 3 hours ahead of me in LA. He still hasn’t grasped the concept of time change even though I’ve been here 5 ½ years and texts me at 6am his time, 3am my time, every morning. Oh well.
Although it’s very early I look forward to his text every morning because I know that it is him letting me know what he is grateful for that day. It makes me smile and starts my day off right. I text him back with what I am grateful for that day as well.
Here are a couple examples from the past few mornings:
“Hi Kiddo- Today I’m grateful for my clients at work, even though some of them are crazy, they help keep me sane.”
“Hi my child. Today I’m grateful for a rainbow I saw : ) “
“Good Morning Child, It’s like 50 degrees here. COLD. I’m grateful for a warm place to sleep : ) .”
Today was, “Hi Child, today I’m grateful for ice cream.”
He reminds me what really matters. It’s the little things that make me smile.
With all of the nuances in Los Angeles- traffic, crowds, city life expenses etc. sometimes it is difficult to remember where we actually live (paradise) and what we’re actually doing with our lives (living our dreams out) and to simply be grateful.
The majority of us have chosen to be here in this crazy city. And it is our choice to work in one of the most competitive industries in the world with some of the most pretentious people in the world. We have to remember that we also work with some of the most talented and devoted people in the world as well.
We should be as grateful as my dad is that we too work with crazy people and they help keep us sane, for rainbows, that we have warm roofs over our heads and obviously for ice cream; which in LA we’ve substituted for fro-yo because its “healthier” and heaven forbid we spend an extra calorie on the real deal.
Don’t let yourself focus on the nuances of life and, when you wake up tomorrow, text someone you love what YOU ARE grateful for. I promise your day will go smoother than it otherwise would have.
Love,
Lindsay : )
