To my lovelies in the entertainment industry; I know I don’t have to tell you this but, my child, you have chosen a difficult path. And at times it can seem like a big scary world out there, filled with backstabbers, naysayers, and emotional vampires. But never fear booboo, I bear good news! While we can’t change others and how they behave, we can certainly make things a bit easier on ourselves. But, HOW?? Well, I’ll tell you. (Don’t interrupt… It’s impolite) Do just like those wily Care Bears do when confronted by that dastardly Professor Coldheart and his minions; Band together and create a force field of positivity around yourself. (OK, so that’s not exactly what the Care Bears do, but I liked that imagery. Leave me alone.)
Woah Woah Woah, Alex! What are you saying? It sounds like you’re turning a perfectly self-serving article of “How I can make my life better” into one that is selfless and all about “helping” others. Well, listen here, Negative Nancy; yes and no. I am about to share a short list of super easy examples of how to positively contribute to other peoples’ creative lives. … And well, do you really need any other reason than that? You do? Seriously? Fine. Uhm.. Something something …Do unto others… Positivity begets positivity… Dopamine… Etc. There.
What’s the word, Bird?
Share your insight and experiences, whether they are good or bad. This includes CD’s, Editors, Photographers, Makeup Artists…(the list goes on) Let’s spread the word about those that are great at their jobs and love doing what they do! Not only to make sure that they keep working but also to give guidance to those who are looking for awesome peeps to collaborate with. (And avoid those that… well, should be avoided.)
Shake that Money Maker!
This might seem silly, and possibly a little annoying at times but, consider contributing to the Kickstarters of talented artists and projects you believe in. Even if it’s just $1 or so. (Come on, I know you spent more than that at Starbucks today…) But, if you really can’t help contribute in a financial capacity to that super neat project, just click that handy dandy “share button” and let the love shine on. Helping to make someone feel supported goes a long, long way.
Were Your Ears Burning?
If you see a breakdown or a job description that you think your friend or colleague would be perfect for, let them know! Encourage them to go after it. Trust me, once you are famous and super rich, you’ll want your friends right there with you. 😉
It’s a Girl!
The experience of making your first movie has a lot of striking similarities to being a new parent. Treat it as if they actually DID just have a baby. (The stress, the constant second-guessing, the sleepless nights…) So, bake a casserole, drop it off, and don’t take up any more time than that. Or offer up your services. (Specific services. Not just the general “let me know if there is anything I can do”… uhm, yes. EVERYTHING! It’s overwhelming!) Offer something specific like, “I’m free during the day this week so, let me know if/when I can pick something up/ drop something off for you”. Or see if they need an extra PA for a day. You get the idea.
Magical Happy Unicorn Thoughts
Once a week (or more if you’re feeling feisty), send a quick personal message a creative person in your life (or any person! I don’t discriminate against the less right-brain-inclined). And whether it’s via Facebook, text, or carrier pig; let them know how they impact you/your creative life in a positive way. (I’ve gotten one or two of these sorts of unsolicited messages, and I can’t even begin to tell you how AMAZING it feels. Those good vibes carried me quite a ways.)
This list is by no means comprehensive. There are many ways to share love and support to those around us. And don’t forget, all of this mushy gushy lovey stuff goes two ways. If you need it, don’t be afraid to ask for help! Give someone else the chance to feel like a superhero. Just remember to be genuine and effusive when it comes to saying “Thank you”!
OK, my kids and kittens. Go forth, live long, and do Good! XO
