Your Audition Wardrobe

0

Stephanie PressmanWhat should be in an actor’s wardrobe especially for auditions & working?

Whether you are working as background or principal these are 20 staples that you should have in your wardrobe if you have nothing else. When starting out and working on low budget projects you almost always provide your own wardrobe. Most importantly know your body and know what looks good on you as well as what fits comfortably. Always have proper fitting undergarments and shape wear to enhance these items. Know your proper bra size and own multiple types of bras and underwear including convertible straps, strapless, sports bras, thongs, etc.

Now, that I’ve covered undergarments… Here is my real list of items lady actors need in their wardrobe. I used my experiences and the advice of other actors and wardrobe mistresses when compiling this list.

1) -Robe if you are wearing underwear/bikini/ or anything skimpy that you might want to cover up between takes

2) -Slippers/uggs if you are wearing heels or uncomfortable shoes these are great for keeping toes warm and relaxed

3) -Warm coat: overnight or outdoor shoots are so much nicer when you have warming gear to throw on between takes

4) -Business shirts : Blue button down shirt /White button down shirt / black button down

5) -Muted & bright colored cardigans

6) -Nice casual bold fitted tees in blue, red, pink, green and purple maybe even a polo in these colors (best buy/ target auditions, etc)

7) -Nice fitted casual plaid button down shirt

8) -denim button down shirt

9) -nice pair of jeans

10) -black slacks

11) -khaki slacks

12) -black leggings

13) – Suit that’s grey, navy or brown

14) -Costumes (scrubs , unlicensed Halloween costumes)

15) -solid one piece bathing suit & solid 2 piece bathing suit

16) -nice dresses in classic fits

(1950s a-line, 60’s pencil skirt, 70’s maxi, 80’s tulle, 90’s baby doll )

17) -comfortable sneakers / plain converse low tops (super commercial look)

18) -comfortable character shoes or sturdy comfortable heels

(When it comes to shoes, nothing that will be uncomfortable after 15 hours on set)

19) -form fitting white & black tank tops

20) -Blacks : black dress, long sleeve black tee, black slacks, black shoes for theater

Now, that’s a lot of things to buy, but don’t forget to utilize the sale rack at GAP, thrift stores, discount shoe stores, and stores such as Marshall’s, TJMaxx, and Target. Actors need all the money we can get so use your inner power of pocketbook sensibleness. Think about every purchase you make when it comes to clothing, “Can I wear this for work” and the more commercial the better.
