In the film industry career change happens– that is a fact.
I for one must talk myself off the ledge, move away from hitting the panic button etc when things change. People always say “change is good” but let’s face it, it doesn’t always feel that way in the middle of it.
There are two things I use when faced with sudden change be it a show’s cancelation, a play’s run ending or even personal life changes.
The first is a quote from the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Please read this with Dame Judi Dench’s perfect English accent.
“All we know about the future is that it will be different. But perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same. So we must celebrate the changes. Because, as someone once said, everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright then, trust me, it’s not yet the end.”
I love this part “perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same”. This line reminds me to be excited about the change and the future. I am reminded that perhaps what I am feeling isn’t fear at all – it is excitement.
The last part of the quote also reminds that things are ever moving and that if it is not the way I wish – it is not the end. Simple.
The second thing I remember when faced with uncertainty and change is Madonna. That’s right the Material Girl. No one embraces and celebrates change like Madge. The truth is change is the reason she is the superstar she is.
Madonna is known as the queen of reinvention because she understood long ago that change keeps you current, exciting and employed.
From Like a Virgin to Like a Prayer Madonna has been True Blue in her quest for a new identity every couple years. Dressed sometimes like a geisha, sometimes a cowgirl and sometimes barely dressed at all she has taken us on a Holiday while bringing interesting reading material from Sex to The English Roses. She has Lived To Tell us “Open your Heart” change is a Celebration. I Cherish her career as it shines a Ray of Light on the fact that change is the Music of our lives. Change is in Vogue and if one resists you may feel Borderline crazy. So the next time careers winds change get Into the Groove and Express yourself – Madonna style.
The fact is if you choose the entertainment industry you are choosing uncertainty and this is good news. You never know which wild and fabulous opportunity awaits you or which new venture will be your Lucky Star. When one job ends it opens up time for a new one – a chance to try anything you have ever dreamed of!
Remember.
“All we know about the future is that it will be different. But perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same.” Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
