The Company You Keep

Alexandra Boylan I have been thinking a lot about the people I spend my time with lately.  And ever since this subject came into my mind, everywhere I turn I keep reading articles about the fact that we ARE who we spend the most time with.  I once read that we are the five people we surround ourselves with on a regular basis.  And I put those thoughts into my mind, and decided to do some re-evaluating on my relationships.

For the past seven months of my life I have been on the road, living out of a suitcase, traveling from state to state, spending time with incredible friends all along the way.  I just recently returned to Los Angeles where I am currently in pre-production on my next film project.  Since my time is so limited and I have been gone for so long, I really have to pick and choose the people I am going to run around this crazy city to catch up with.  And almost without thinking I discovered the people I want to surround my life with.

In my sister’s new workbook “The Elijah Project” there is an activity where you draw a circle and place your name in the center, and then you’re advised to start placing the names of your family and friends around your own.  You can move people in and out with arrows deciding who are safe people, and whom you should let close to your heart and who should be moved away.

This has spawned a new thinking in my life, and I have made a conscious effort to begin discerning between who gets my precious time and who doesn’t.

In the film industry, I find this is a very important activity and mindset to constantly be reminded of.  I am a positive, optimistic person in general, and feel drained after spending time with people who try to bring me down.  I want to surround myself with go-getters and chargers, who like myself, drive their lives forward to accomplish their dreams and goals.

Who do you spend your time with?  Is there someone who is constantly bringing you down, making it impossible to stay optimistic because of his or her pessimistic attitude?  I challenge you to join me on the journey to surround your life with people who lift you up, drive you forward and support your dreams.  Because just like “We are what we eat,”  “We are who we spend our time with!”
