In the last couple of months, I read dozens of fun, informative and thoughtful articles from intelligent, hard working entertainment industry gals and entrepreneurs. What struck me the most when reading these articles, including my own, is that in many ways, we were talking to ourselves. Many of us were sharing stories and information we had learned from our PAST selves. Some were talking to our CURRENT selves.
What I thought was really amazing was that all these articles were written by women who, at some point began to better themselves, their career and their futures by taking ACTION! So, if you find that you are still figuring out your next steps, I urge you to take action. It’s not always easy to focus in on what that action should be so I’m assigning you homework.
The assignment: Write a letter to yourself. Actually, write three letters.
First, write a letter from your CURRENT self to your PAST self. Give her advice on career, love, finances, fitness, whatever comes to mind. Just write. And be honest. What do you wish she (you) knew back then?
Next, write a letter from your PAST self to your CURRENT self. This is a letter that is intended to pat you on the back. Take this opportunity to acknowledge, admire and compliment your current self for all the goals you have met, the hurdles you have leapt over and for the lessons you have learned.
Now, write a letter from your CURRENT self to your FUTURE self. Tell future you what your intentions are. Get them out in the open. Is future you going to eat better, read more books and write more? Great, jot that down.
Put it all out there. Create a timeline for future you. Create a to do list. Create and Act!
Take these letters and read them out loud. YES. Out loud. Get out of your head and make yourself be heard by you. Thank your PAST self for all the lessons she taught you. Tell your CURRENT self that she has come a long way and congratulate her for her accomplishments. Tell FUTURE you that you’re on your way and you already have heals picked out for that Oscar dress!
I know, this might sound cheesy, but try it. You might be surprised by what comes out.
