Audition Clothes: Mix and Match

Tristen So, you’ve done your best to stock your closet full of great audition pieces, but it seems like every time you turn around you’ve gotta buy something else. Never fear! Tristen is here… to make sure that you look perfect for your audition! Here are some of my “go-to” audition looks that have never failed me.

First things first, let’s talk about how important your audition attire is. On a scale of 1-10 on the importance scale, I’d put it around a 7. It’s important, but you’re not going to book the job based on your clothes. So, my advice is always to “wear something this character would wear”. This means that if you’re called in for a fireman, you don’t need to show up in a full fireman’s uniform. But, I would NOT go in wearing a Hawaiian Shirt and board shorts! A nice dark pair of jeans and a fitted t-shirt would do just fine!

If you need to go in as military, no need for full camouflage. Black pants and a olive/tan/grey tank or fitted tee is going to work!

Another thing to remember is that casting will ask for specific things if the client knows what they want. But, you’re not going to get in trouble because you don’t own khaki cargos. Personally, I have yet to find a pair of khakis that don’t make me shudder every time I put them on, so nice jeans work for my Best Buy auditions. So far, so good.

Here are some easy, inexpensive options for your auditions.

“Mom” – A nice pair of pants/Jeans + Bright t-shirt, blouse, or cardigan (NO CLEAVAGE)

“Nurse” – Light blue medium-fit t-shirt (not too much cleavage, please) + black pants.

“Doctor” – I steer away from white on camera so this is your choice. If it were me, I would wear Black pants + Nice blouse.

“Femme Fatale” – Skinny black pants/Jeans + Fitted tank. Black makes the “ladies” look smaller so just keep that in mind if you’re trying to show them off. And if you need a little help in that, ahem, area…a couple of bra inserts never hurt anyone. I won’t tell.

“Girl Next Door” – Similar to “mom” but you can have a little more fun. Cute blouse + Jeans, or a sweet colorful dress. Stay away from spaghetti strap dresses as, when the camera is zoomed in on you, you start to look…um…naked.

“Police Officer” – Black pants + Navy or blue top of some sort. T-shirt, polo, or long sleeve. (P.S. they always have awesome options at Target for stuff like this)

“Teacher” – Nice blouse + Pencil skirt/Dress pants.

“Club wear” – Skirts + Bright top + Heels

“Bride” – Any white dress (check Marshalls and TJ Maxx). And, if you’re desperate, jeans and a white t-shirt.

“Business woman” – Pants or pencil skirt + Grey or Navy blazer. (Check for the online sales at EXPRESS, they’ve got the best suits for the ladies!)

“Best Buy Employee” – Blue polo or T-shirt + jeans, black pants, or khakis.

“Target Employee” – Red polo or T-shirt + jeans, black pants, or khakis.

Any other employee – You get the idea. If you don’t have the right color, just get close.

When in doubt, if you don’t have anything to wear, just wear a nice, unwrinkled top that you look good in and a clean pair of pants. After all, that’s what wardrobe is on set for, right?
