30 Days 30 Workouts – Day 1

30 days 30 workouts photo 1Okay, I bet you’re thinking…why would anyone want to workout for 30 days.  I don’t want to work out for 30 days.  I want to sit on my couch and watch television, but I also want to lose weight.  I’ve been working the weight watchers program for over 3 years and I’m not at my goal weight, but I’m healthier.  I want to work out a few days a week, get a good sweat, and have fun.  The problem I’m facing is that I am petrified of trying out new classes.  I’m a professional stage actress and I have no problem singing in front of hundreds of people, but you ask me to go to a yoga class, and I start having a panic attack.  I’m forcing myself to try new classes and activities to find the best workouts without having a mental breakdown.

Number one…Broadway Bodies at the Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts.  Broadway Bodies offers two different classes, one classic Broadway dance and one called “Gleeful”.  This dance class boasts actual choreography from your favorite Broadway shows and episodes of “Glee”.  I found out about it from someone I know on Facebook.  I thought this would be an easy class to go to because a) I might actually know someone and b) I knew where it was located and I’m familiar with the parking situation. It’s ridiculous to think about, but if I know the parking situation, I’m more apt to attend.  Sometimes I drive by certain studios and scope out parking before I even attend a class.  But I talk more about that in my stalking blog.

I decided to take the “Gleeful” class because, truth be told, this class fit in my schedule. I’m not a “gleek” but I can definitely appreciate the music.  I walked into the studio and was quickly greeted by someone with a Broadway Bodies t-shirt.  I filled out my paperwork, paid my 12 dollars in cash and I was ready to dance.  I was immediately introduced to the instructor/choreographer Joseph Corella.  He was very friendly and very pumped to have a new student in class.   Joseph didn’t start with a warm up or any stretching, he just hit play on the stereo and we started with a simple step touch.  I was sweating in a matter of minutes.  Joseph breaks down the harder combinations, which gives you a little chance to breathe, but the class is filled with back-to-back, high-energy dance routines.  In a nutshell, Joseph kicked my ass.  Overall, the choreography was pretty easy to follow and I liked that there was not a lot of pressure to be perfect.  If you like to dance and sweat then this is a great class for you.  A bit of caution, they like to video tape the last routine for their website.  Luckily, most of my makeup stayed on until the end of class.  I will definitely be back.  Check out broadwaybodies.com for classes in Los Angeles and New York.
