Los Angeles – Last Friday night I had the honor of joining almost 100 friends for a screening of Crazy Rich Asians. Grant Imahara (of Mythbusters fame) had booked a screening as he recognized this movie was a game changer: “The first all Asian studio film since The Joy Luck Club 25 years ago! Crazy Rich Asians is a really important movie. It’s been 25 years since a major Hollywood movie has featured an all Asian cast (Joy Luck Club). Not only that, but Crazy Rich Asians features an Asian romantic lead, which is unprecedented. Hosting a screening (two, actually-…

*free Halloween download 10/31/14* “Work begets work.” You’ve heard it. The cliché your friends quote when they rope you into working on their micro budget short — for no money. There’s another truism you might be familiar with — the old “you just never know…” In the case of Camilla Ochlan and Bonita Gutierrez’s road to publishing their first novel, The Werewolf Whisperer, both sayings proved prophetic. These two women are a great lesson for the mantra many of you have heard from me at conventions: “Create what you are passionate about. Assemble a great team. And recognize the constraints…
Something awesome happened on May 10th and I want to share it with you. Because it changed my outlook on life and I truly believe that it could fill a desperate vacuum here in LA. And, hey, it may just change your life, too. We are all busy gals, endlessly juggling a multitude of spinning plates (work! relationships! friends! family! Finding the perfect baby shower gift for your brother’s wife while planning your BFF’s bachlorette extravaganza!) all while keeping our careers at full throttle, nurturing our creative irons in the fire, and trying not to burn ourselves out. So not…
On October 19th &20th, 1000’s descended on Seattle’s Conference Center for GeekGirlCon. Now in its 3rd year, this annual convention is a “celebration of geeky women and girls across the nerd spectrum and their contribution to comics, gaming, science, technology, pop culture, art, math, academics, engineering, and much more.” Despite its focus on the female gender “all genders, orientations, races, ethnicities, abilities and fandoms are welcome,” and this is what I love about GeekGirlCon. It truly provides “an open, inclusive, and welcoming place for geeks of all types.”* The Exhibitor Hall was even larger this year continuing the lovely trend of growing exponentially every…
Can you believe we’re more than halfway through September? Time for Fall Cleaning! Here’s a helpful checklist as you pare down your closet into a lean mean red carpet machine… 1) Shoes Neutral ballet flats, gladiator sandals (they aren’t going anywhere—and let’s face it it’s hot here in LA ‘til November!), heeled black boots, black heels, nude pumps and one “statement” shoe: a bold color or eye catching style. 2) Bags One evening purse & one clutch (one in a neutral tone and one in a bold eye-catching hue, one bag that can transition from day to night, and one…
The First Annual Geekie Awards were held Sunday night at the Avalon Theater, and it was an absolute blast! It was a lavish and nerdy affair, complete with cosplayers, an R2 unit, red carpets and celebrities. Not to mention the tech touches like 3-D printers as centerpieces, the restored bridge of Star Trek’s The Enterprise, and badges that shot lasers. The festivities began with incomparable Stan Lee receiving a Lifetime Achieve Award presented by Seth Green. Alison Haislip was a funny and charming host who kept the fun flowing. photo by JD Piche, Red Carpet ReportAnd huge props must be…
Whether you are off to San Diego for the world’s biggest “geekfest” otherwise known as Comic-Con like a number of the writers for “Ms. In The Biz,” or checking your social media streams to get the goodies, I wanted to share some of the most fabulous cosplay I’ve witnessed to whet your appetite for this weekend! THIS IS GEEK COUTURE AT ITS FINEST! Steampunk Huntress by Andrea Letamendi photo by Mike Rollerson Dina Kampmeyer as Maleficent The League of S.T.E.A.M. …and a website that will ruin you. It is upon us…the Mother of all Cons: San Diego Comic Con! From July 18-21 geeks from all over the world descend on San Diego, taking the city by storm and reveling in all things nerdy. So, being a proud geek myself, I wanted to share some fashion tips that i’ve gleaned from my many years at SDCC. What does a comic covention have to do with fashion and red carpets you may ask? Well, as geekdom has mainstreamed, the photo ops, and paparazzi have multiplied and are there to document it all. So what to…
This article focuses on something near and dear to all our female hearts. We love and covet them, even when they hurt us. Men? Frakk, no—shoes!!! The ultimate accesory to make an outfit pop. Never underestimate how often your shoes are photographed on the carpet. Here is a photo of some of the lovely gals from ElfQuest: A Fan Imagining at the IFQ Festival this February where Paula Rhodes and I were awarded Best Direction of a Webisode. Left to Right: Shannon Nelson in Louboutin nude pumps, Stephanie Thorpe in Kate Spade patent nude heels (borrowed from Shannon), Paula Rhodes…
Time for another peek into the world of the red carpet. This photo was taken earlier this year: The 2013 Streamy Awards in February. Its a favorite photo of mine but as usual it came with lessons. The red carpet was in the blinding afternoon sun with a long wait–so a word to the wise–always bring some blotters with you, as the organizers often don’t care about shiny, sweaty faces. In this photo, I’m with pals & coleagues Kristen Nedopack (actress and geek guru) & PR genius Brian Rodda. Kristen Nedopak (pictured left) found this bright pink stunner from BCBGMAXARIA…
The red carpet is a unique and peculiar situation many of us frequently face in the entertainment biz. This series will explore the ways to rock the red with style and a sense of fun, all while doing it on a budget. For this premiere post I wanted to highlight a photo that embodies the spirit of this new publication, Ms in the Biz. The women pictured here are all contributors to this online mag. (From left to right: Kristen Nedopak, Helenna Santos-Levy, Stephanie Thorpe & Leah Cevoli) The most important thing to bear in mind when faced with the red…
